The Veteran/Youth Mentorship Project enhances Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast's mission by recruiting veterans to mentor youth in Charlotte County, Florida.
The Veteran/Youth Mentorship Advisory Team, a collaboration of community partners and citizens, consists on organizations such as Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County (DOH-Charlotte), U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, Drug Free Charlotte County, Charlotte County Community Services, and the Englewood Community Coalition/Creative Arts.
In addition to assist in the recruiting of mentors, the Veteran/Youth Mentorship Advisory Team enhances the curriculum to assist with activities that facilitate learning life skills such as relationship building, healthy choices, accessing community resources such as mental health and housing resources.
Creating connections can have a positive impact on the lives of mentees and mentors, and lead to improved mental health and well-being for both. Engaging as a team in structured activities can foster meaningful relationships. The youth have an opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive, while veterans are empowered through sharing their knowledge, strength, and leadership to then empower and motivate youth.
