Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County’s (DOH-Charlotte) Environmental Public Health section inspects the maintenance and performance of Aerobic Treatment Units (ATUs) annually in Charlotte County to ensure compliance with Florida Administrative Code.

ATUs are wastewater disposal systems that are more efficient at processing waste. ATUs are highly versatile as they provide the ability to build a larger house on a smaller lot because they require a smaller drainfield size than conventional septic systems. 

ATUs are also more efficient as they reduce the amount of biological material that enters septic system’s drainfield, potentially extending its lifespan. They are also considered to be less environmentally harmful when compared with conventional septic systems.


ATU Requirements in Charlotte County, Florida

  • Homeowners must maintain a valid Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal System Operating Permit (DEP 4081), for the life of the ATUs. The permit costs $200, and must be renewed every two years.
  • Homeowners must maintain a valid maintenance agreement with an approved septic maintenance entity for the life of the ATUs. Maintenance contracts for new ATU constructions will be valid for two years. Subsequent renewals must be valid for at least a year.
  • Septic maintenance entities are required to inspect and service ATUs at least twice a year. The entities must submit their inspection reports to DOH-Charlotte’s Environmental Public Health section.
  • Homeowners are allowed to maintain their own ATUs if they acquire the proper certification. Homeowners are encouraged to call their ATU manufacturer to ask if they are eligible to be certified and who could certify them. If the homeowner becomes their ATU’s maintenance entity, they must also apply for an Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal System Operating Permit (DEP 4081) and submit their twice-a-year inspections to DOH-Charlotte’s Environmental Public Health section. Homeowners who become their ATU’s maintenance entity must also complete a homeowner’s maintenance agreement (DEP 4066) accompanied by a $25 fee.
