Who Needs a Permit

An existing septic system permit is required in Charlotte County, Florida, if:

In some cases, this process may require the septic system to be upgraded or brought into full compliance with current rule requirements.

How to Get a Permit

Submit an application form. Note that the first page must be signed by the owner or the owner’s authorized representative, engineer, or licensed contractor. If an authorized representative signs the application page, a letter of authorization must be provided with the application.

Required Application Materials

  • Site plan: The plan must show boundaries and lot dimensions, along with any of the following features that either exist or are being proposed:
    • Structures
    • Swimming pools, 
    • Recorded easements
    • Onsite sewage treatment and disposal system components
    • Slope of the property
    • Wells (including public wells within 200 feet of the applicant’s property)
    • Potable and non-potable water lines and valves 
    • Drainage features
    • Filled areas
    • Excavated areas for onsite sewage systems
    • Obstructed areas
    • Surface water bodies: The boundary of a tidally-influenced surface water body requires elevations that must be set by a professional surveyor or mapper.
  • Detailed floor plan: For residences, the floor plan must be drawn to scale and show the existing building and proposed changes. All rooms must be labeled, and the plan must show the square footage of the building area. For non-residential facilities, the provided floor plan must also be drawn to scale, showing the total square footage, plumbing drains and fixtures, and any other information that would affect the composition and quantity of generated wastewater.
  • Mean annual flood line (if applicable): The mean annual flood line must be determined if a permanent non-tidal surface water body exists on or within 75 ft. of the applicant’s property. The applicant may request DOH-Charlotte to delineate the surface water body for an additional fee, or they may contract with a certified professional surveyor. 
  • Water usage history: Provide the last 12 months of water usage for residential and 18 months for commercial properties unless the building is served by an unmetered well.
  • Existing system and system repair evaluation form: The septic tank must be pumped by a registered septic tank pumper, and the contractor must verify its capacity and structural integrity in this form.
  • Detailed construction plans: An engineer must submit detailed system construction plans if the drainfield will exceed 1,500 square feet, domestic sewage flow exceeds 2,500 gallons per day (GPD), or the commercial sewage flow exceeds 1,000 GPD. All plans and forms submitted by the engineer must be dated, signed, and sealed.
